Bloomberg Article on the Administration Plans to Eliminate HUD Offices
Hi AHMA Eds –I am sorry for the late urgent email. I wanted to make sure you are aware of this Bloomberg article (also attached) on HUD Office Closures. This news really picked up steam over the last day as national media is catching up to rumors. I am aware of local media outlets covering it. Per this Bloomberg article, “Under the plan, regional offices would remain open in Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Denver, Fort Worth and Philadelphia as well as Kansas City, Kansas. Field office closures would leave Arizona, Michigan, Ohio and 31 other states plus the District of Columbia without any local HUD office. The six field offices that would be left open are those in Anchorage, Alaska; Greensboro, North Carolina; Honolulu; Jacksonville, Florida; Los Angeles; and San Juan, Puerto Rico. From members and industry partners , we have been made aware of HUD staff in Detroit, San Fransico, Boston, and Seattle being escorted out of their offices. I am just not sure if it “all field employees” or some.
I cannot emphasize enough how it is important to engage your Senators about this change. You can also contact Representatives after outreach to Senators. If you are in states with Republican (Majority) Senators, this would be a critical time for your members to educate them about how important HUD’s regional and field offices play in their states. Examples of disaster response and recovery, development/preservation transactions in rural markets, timely funding delivery, Service to rural housing markets, and localized customer service are great points to emphasize with them. Please let me know if I can be of any assistance. If you have better information, I would really love to know about it.
