HUD Opens the Nomination Period for the HUD Secretary’s Award for Excellence in Healthy Homes

The HUD Secretary’s Award for Excellence in Healthy Homes highlights the impact that healthy housing plays in improving the overall health and well-being of individuals and communities. It is also a national platform to showcase results from programs of varying scope, funding, and/or resources.

The nomination period is now open!  The deadline for submissions is May 15, 2024.

Award criteria encompasses healthy equity, innovative approaches, best practices, policies, research, and community engagement that make significant contributions to reduce exposure to health risks, environmental hazards, and substandard housing, especially for underserved communities. The winning nomination should describe elements that can be replicable to other geographic areas of the nation.

Eligible organizations (list not exhaustive):

  • State, county, municipal government, such as housing or health agencies
  • Community or faith-based organizations
  • Healthcare providers
  • Tribal governments/nations
  • Childcare providers
  • Organizations representing affordable housing developers and builders

HUD has been a champion of the Federal government’s goal to address lead-based paint and other home health and safety hazards.  Previously called the HUD Secretary’s Award for Healthy Homes, it has been presented since 2015.  It is one of several Awards programs maintained by the Department.  Previous awardees and their work can be seen on the nomination website.
